'Empathy Is a Boner Killer' provides Lyonne with an acting showcase for the ages, but more than that, it reinforces the uglier sides of Nicky's personality that are sometimes eclipsed by her charm. She's frank but distant, affable but tough, a perfect balance of traits for a lovable yet complex supporting character. Litchfield was designed with sympathy in mind, and no prisoner thrums with more rakish charisma than Natasha Lyonne's sarcastic smack addict Nicky Nichols. Even stone-cold drug runners had a soft spot for Pinkberry, or Dora the Explorer, or some similarly embarrassing thing that'd comically deflate their machismo.
